About the Fulbright Programme
The Fulbright Programme was established in Ireland In 1957. It is supported by the US Department of State and the Department of Foreign Affairs to operate an educational exchange program offering scholarships for US citizens to study, research and lecture in Ireland and Irish citizens to study, research or lecture in the US. The Commission derives its income from the Irish and US Governments, higher education institutions, public agencies and organisations and donations from the corporate sector.
Awards for US Citizens to come to Ireland:
Fulbright US student awards (approximately €16,000) enable US postgraduate students to spend one academic year studying or researching in Ireland. The Fulbright Commission invites applications from all disciplines including the visual and performing arts and deaf studies.
• US Students apply through The Institute of International Education (IIE) which annually advertises and short-lists candidates. The Fulbright Commission in Ireland makes recommendations to the J. William Fulbright Scholarship Board that makes the final selection
• US student applicants are encouraged to contact the Fulbright Commission in Ireland for advice on their project proposals, academic programs, admission processes and institutional affiliations
• The competition for 2013-2013 will open in May 2012.
Fulbright US scholar awards (maximum €70,000) are for US scholars or professionals to research and or teach in Ireland for 3 – 12 months in a wide range of disciplines.
• US scholars or professionals should see the Council of International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) for further information and to access the application
• US scholar applicants are encouraged to contact the Fulbright Commission for advice on their project proposals and institutional affiliations
• The competition for 2013-2014 will open in April 2012 and deadline for the awards is August 1st 2012.
